A lot of Tennessee homeowners need professional pest control, but few get to peek behind the curtain to see what’s happening behind the scenes when it comes to fall pest control. At All-American Pest Control, we believe that transparency is an essential part of our business. To learn more about this, we sat down with one of our own All-American pest experts to discuss his experiences in the field, the tips he shares with customers, and how he helps homes stay protected throughout the fall and beyond.

Meet Our Pro

Meet Kyle Brown. Kyle is a Service Manager who has been with All-American Pest Control for 10 years. After a former co-worker made the switch to All-American and began to sing its praises, Kyle decided to apply when he and his wife started a family and he needed a job with stable hours that wouldn’t require him to work every weekend and holiday

Now, a decade later, Kyle couldn’t be happier with his decision. He loves sharing his knowledge and experience to help both his team and his customers, which provides the freedom and fulfillment that make his job something he looks forward to each day.

Common Pests Our Technicians See in Fall

Fall tends to be a busy time of year for pest infestations because, as the weather gets cooler, pests start looking for warmer shelter. They also need someplace with a steady food supply. Our homes offer both.

Spiders, ants, and rodents are all common fall pests to find in homes, but when it comes to the pests Kyle sees most often, boxelder bugs, stink bugs, and Asian lady beetles top the list. These seasonal pests congregate on warm exterior walls on sunny days and as Kyle puts it, “These pests are great at finding ways into structures, but are terrible at finding ways out. Most of the time, they end up in the living space.”

DIY Mistakes Homeowners Often Make

There is one main mistake homeowners make that Kyle sees over and over again. Simply put, “They typically don't take any precautions before the pests enter the home.”

You can probably relate. You simply don’t think about pests until they show up inside your house. At that point, it’s too late to take preventative measures; you have to act retroactively to eliminate them.

What other DIY mistakes do homeowners make when it comes to pest control? When it comes to stink bugs, boxelder bugs, and Asian lady beetles specifically, Kyle often hears about homeowners squishing them to get rid of the ones they see. This is not only ineffective at addressing the larger issue, but it can also leave fabrics stained and your house smelling quite unpleasant.

He also often sees the misuse of over-the-counter bug sprays. These products are typically designed to kill on contact, so they usually get sprayed haphazardly wherever bugs are found. This can be dangerous. Kyle explains, “The area in which products can be applied is very restricted. Most of the pests gather above head height or on surfaces [where] you would not want products applied.”

Signs That Pests Are Sneaking Inside

There are a lot of different signs to look for when trying to determine if pests are getting into your house.

  • With seasonal pests, look outside to see if they’re congregating on sunny walls or around doors and windows.

  • Look for live or dead pests in your house.

  • Listen for scratching, rustling, or squeaking noises in your walls or ceiling.

  • Look for droppings, egg casings, and nesting materials.

  • Be aware of unpleasant odors.

  • Look for webs.

  • Check for bug activity near windows and entryways at night.

Prevention Tips Straight from the Pros

Like Kyle said, the biggest mistake homeowners make is not taking precautions before pests show up. If you take the time to implement some prevention strategies, you can minimize your chances of ending up with pests in your house.

Kyle’s advice for fall pest prevention is this: “The best advice is to seal up as many openings as possible to physically prevent the pests from entering the home. If or when the fall pests get inside, I recommend using a vacuum to remove them.”

Additionally, you can:

  • Reduce lighting or switch to yellow bulbs to cut insect activity

  • Keep food in sealed containers

  • Reduce clutter in your house

  • Cut back foliage around the exterior of your house

  • Minimize moisture inside and outside

  • Get a fall pest control service

Why Fall Service Makes All the Difference

If you’re wondering about Kyle’s best piece of advice for Tennessee homeowners, we asked him for you! “My tip is to hire a professional to protect your home from pests, termites, and rodents.  For most people, your home is your biggest investment and where you and your family spend the most time. Having a professional protect your home can provide peace of mind.”

So often people’s biggest barrier to choosing professional pest control is that they don’t want to spend the money if a pest infestation hasn’t occurred yet. However, when you think of it like Kyle does, it’s well worth the cost. In fact, preventative fall pest control will likely save you money in the long-term, since you won’t have additional costs associated with the damages that pests often cause.

Fall pest control makes all the difference in preventing pest infestations and costly repairs, while offering peace of mind. With All-American’s fall pest control, you’ll be certain that the service is tailored to your home’s needs, plus it’s incredibly thorough. A typical treatment from Kyle includes all of the areas where pests might show up.

“We treat foliage and shrubbery where fall pests like to live and reproduce, in order to start breaking life cycles and thinning out the population. We also treat the perimeter of homes, including doorways, around windows, and any other entry points to help prevent pests from entering the structure.”
