Say goodbye to brown recluse spiders

We love Nashville, but we sure dislike brown recluse spiders. If you feel like us, give us a call today. With nearly 60 years of experience in Middle TN, we have battled and beat our fair share of these troublesome pests. We have designed three programs with your home, family, budget, and schedule in mind.

Brown Recluse Identification

illustration of brown recluse spider

Brown recluse spiders are medium-sized and range in length from ¼ to ¾ of an inch. Their most distinguishing mark is a violin-shaped mark on the top of the body; they also have three pairs of eyes that are arranged in a unique semi-circle pattern.

Many times homeowners confuse wolf spiders or other household spiders with brown recluse. If you are unsure about the spiders you see, trap one and bring it by for identification, or take a picture and upload it here for expert ID.

We can help you with any type of spider or other creepy crawly. If you are experiencing brown recluse, keep reading about the three programs we have designed.

Brown Recluse Service Program Details

The first of the three programs is our Brown Recluse Ultra-Low-Level Program. This program relies upon thorough interior and exterior services each quarter along with placement of glue boards in conspicuous placed throughout your home. We monitor and track results to make adjustments as needed.

If you want a little more intensive program, our Brown Recluse Low-Level program adds attic treatments and crawl space applications to your initial service.  Brown recluse seems to lurk in these more hidden areas.

Some homeowners prefer to do the most they can do to battle these elusive creatures. If this is you, you may want to consider our Brown Recluse Standard Service. With this service, the initial treatment also includes dusting in your wall voids through electrical sockets. The details of each service option are included in the table below. We are always ready to provide a Free Home Evaluation to walk you through the options and customize a program that fits your home and family.

Other Helpful Information

How concerned should I be?

Brown recluse spiders are not aggressive and most bites occur in response to pressure when a spider becomes trapped against bare skin. For this reason, bites are rare, even in homes with severe infestations.

What can I do to avoid being bitten?

  • Keep items such as clothing, bedding, etc… off the floor
  • Shake out shoes and clothing before getting dressed
  • Remove bed skirts and inspect bedding before going to bed
  • If you store clothing, shoes, papers, etc… use airtight containers and seal them with tape
  • Reduce clutter and vacuum regularly under furniture
  • Inspect and clean children’s rooms often and keep toys in airtight storage containers
  • Don’t handle live spiders (not even on glue board monitors)
  • Don’t miss any of your scheduled services
  • If you purchase a large item, inspect it as carefully as possible before bringing it into the home
  • If you purchase items from antique sales, garage sales or consignment sales try to remove it from the packaging before bringing it into the home
  • If you will be using a storage facility, try to have it treated before moving your items in

What are the Symptoms of a brown recluse bite?

The initial bite is generally painless. Findings of a raised, hardened area and associated redness may not be seen for 6 to 12 hours. Bites that progress to necrosis tends to show progression in 48 to 72 hours. Central blistering with surrounding gray to purple discoloration may appear. The site is surrounded by a ring of blanched skin that is surrounded by a large area of redness, producing the “red, white and blue” sign typical of a brown recluse bite. Only approximately 1 in 10 bites result in necrosis. The physical reaction depends on the amount of venom injected, bite location and individual sensitivity to the bite. Most Brown Recluse bites heal without severe scarring.

What should I do if bitten?

Remain calm. Apply an ice pack directly to the bite and immediately seek medical attention. It is important to collect the spider for positive identification.

Things to keep in mind

This Brown Recluse Reduction program is designed to minimize the Brown Recluse spider population. Brown Recluse spider reduction is best achieved through a combination of efforts including monitoring, inspection, pest control material application, spider habitat reduction and at times alterations of the structure and/or landscape. However, it is important to understand that some level of Brown Recluse infestation will be present at all times during the life of the service whether or not the occupant sees them.
