Turkestan Cockroach

What are Turkestan cockroaches?

turkestan roach

Turkestan roaches are an outdoor cockroach species originally from the Middle East that have become a common sight in Tennessee. They’re a bit smaller than the more well-known American cockroaches and typically grow just under one inch long. Males and females of this species look very different from one another. While they both have oval-shaped bodies, males are tan in color and have wings, while females are a shinier, dark brown color and appear wingless, although they do have short wings. Males can fly, but females cannot.

Turkestan cockroaches are omnivores that will eat a wide variety of plant and animal matter. They’ll less commonly eat things like glue and fabric. Like most cockroach species, these roaches prefer to live in warm, dark, and moist environments but are better adapted to drier conditions than other outdoor species. They are primarily outdoor pests, but the males sometimes get indoors because they are attracted to light.

Should I be concerned about Turkestan cockroaches?

All cockroaches can spread bacteria, and since these roaches can wander into our living spaces from the outside, it’s best to get your home’s perimeter treated and interior inspected if you have any reason to suspect that Turkestan cockroaches are present on your property.

Why do I have a Turkestan cockroach problem?

These roaches have become a common outdoor pest because of their adaptability and faster development cycle than other common outdoor roach species in Tennessee. For these reasons, Turkestan cockroaches can be found in all kinds of areas, including cracks in the pavement, water meter boxes, wood and compost piles, garages, and crawl spaces.

It’s possible your property is attracting them if it has plenty of moisture, shaded areas, and food sources, but it’s also possible to end up with Turkestan roaches on your property if you haven’t done anything in particular to attract them.

How do I get rid of Turkestan cockroaches?

A pest control professional, like those at All-American Pest Control, can do an inspection of your property to determine where these roaches are likely coming from. Our service professionals can then offer tips and treatment options to decrease the roaches’ numbers and prevent them from wandering inside. If you think you have a Turkestan cockroach problem, schedule your free home evaluation with us and we will take it from there.

Can I get rid of Turkestan cockroaches myself?

When cockroaches show up, they aren’t in a hurry to leave. Usually a cockroach infestation continues to grow if the conditions are favorable for them. While you can certainly tackle the issue on your own, the quickest, most efficient way to rid yourself of a pest issue is to use a professional pest control service.

How can I prevent Turkestan cockroaches in the future?

Preventing Turkestan cockroaches is better than dealing with them after they’ve shown up on your property. These tips can help you make sure they don’t infest your yard or home:

  • Seal cracks and crevices, both around your foundation and siding and in your pavement and walkways.

  • Trim back foliage around your house to reduce shaded areas and to encourage evaporation of excess water.

  • Address moisture issues both inside and outside your house.

  • Eliminate outdoor food sources.

  • Install yellow outdoor LED lights (as opposed to brighter white/blue LEDs) to attract less Turkestan cockroaches and other pests at night.

  • Seal entry points into your house with weatherstripping under doors, caulking to indoor gaps, better seals around pipe openings, etc.

  • Store food inside your home in sealed containers.

  • Keep your home tidy and free of spills, crumbs, and other messes.
