Many homes in the southern states including right here in Tennessee are built on slabs. These flat, concrete layers are a great foundation for the home to sit on and since there is not a lot of freezing here in Middle TN; a slab is often the preferred foundation. But one thing that our Nashville pest control pros are being asked is whether or not slab homes have termite problems. It seems that if there is no wood touching the ground, then termites shouldn’t be an issue, right? Well, unfortunately this is not the case.

Subterranean termites live underground and use mud tubes to travel through the soil in search of moist, decaying wood that they can consume. It makes sense that a slab would fend off termites but this is simply not the case. Termites are quite efficient at their job of destroying wood and they have found ways to bypass a layer of concrete and still find access to wood structures. How do termites make it past a slab?

  • They crawl through cracks in the slab

  • They use plumbing and utility entries to get inside

  • They can crawl right up the slab

As the ground settles, shifts and moves with the weather and time, slab layers can crack. And it would only take a tiny crack for the worker termites to enter into the home. In addition, it is easy for there to be a small opening around pipes and other utility openings. If these areas are not sealed off then there is an increased chance of termites gaining access. But don’t expect that you will see this happen. Termites work behind the scenes, easily going undetected for a long period of time until the termite damage has already begun.

And let’s not forget that while subterranean termites cannot be in the sunlight for long periods of time, they are capable of climbing right up the slab layer to find a source of wood to feed on. So, yes, it is very easy for termites in Nashville and Middle TN to infest homes built on a slab.

The good news is that at All-American Pest Control we understand just how damaging termites are and how devastating and costly their damages can be. So we trust the Sentricon® Termite Colony Elimination System to deliver environmentally safe and highly effective termite control that kills existing termite activity and prevents future colonies from forming.
