If you live in Middle Tennessee, you may have encountered boxelder bugs—especially in the fall and spring. These black bugs with red markings can be a frustrating seasonal nuisance for homeowners. Learn why they show up, what attracts them, and how to prevent an infestation before it begins.

What Are Boxelder Bugs & Why Do They Come Inside?

Boxelder bugs are about half an inch long, with black bodies and distinctive red or orange markings. They have six legs, two antennae, and a flat, oval shape.

These pests are primarily a problem during the cooler months of fall and early spring. As temperatures drop in the fall, boxelder bugs gather on the sunny sides of buildings looking for warmth. From there, they slip into homes through small exterior gaps—like cracks in siding, gaps around windows and doors, torn screens, or open attic vents.

Once inside, they search for dark, hidden areas—often inside wall voids or attics—to overwinter. They stay dormant through winter and emerge again in the spring.

When & Where You’re Likely to See Them

In Middle Tennessee, boxelder bugs are most visible during the fall, as they try to enter homes, and again in spring, when they exit from overwintering sites. You might spot them on south- and west-facing exterior walls, around boxelder, maple, or ash trees, or inside near windows and attic spaces.

Are Boxelder Bugs Harmful?

While these bugs are annoying, they are not dangerous. They don’t bite, sting, or cause structural damage. However, they can stain fabrics, walls, and upholstery with their waste, and they emit a strong odor when crushed. Fortunately, they don't reproduce indoors, so even if several have entered your home, the infestation won't grow over winter.

DIY Tips to Prevent Boxelder Bug Infestations

Taking proactive steps in late summer can help prevent fall invasions. Start by sealing entry points. Caulk any cracks around windows, doors, and siding, and repair or replace damaged window screens. Upgrading weather stripping can also make a big difference.

Outdoor maintenance helps, too. Rake up fallen leaves and seedpods near host trees like boxelder and maple. If the problem is recurring and severe, consider removing these trees from your property.

If you do see boxelder bugs indoors, use a vacuum to gently remove them without crushing. For visible clusters, spray with soapy water. You might also introduce deterrents like mint plants to discourage them from hanging around.

Why DIY Isn’t Always Enough

Even with careful prevention, boxelder bugs can still find a way in. Here’s why:

  • They overwinter in hard-to-reach areas like wall voids, making DIY solutions ineffective once they’re inside.

  • Many over-the-counter products lack the residual power needed for long-term control.

  • Timing is critical. If you miss the seasonal treatment window, bugs may already be nesting inside.

When to Call a Professional

Wondering if it’s time to bring in the pros? Reach out if:

  • You see large clusters of bugs inside or out

  • The problem recurs every fall or spring

  • Bugs are turning up in your living areas

  • You simply want long-term peace of mind
