Ants in my kitchen, bathroom, and basement – seriously, it’s not even officially spring yet! I hope this isn’t a precursor to what the spring and summer months are gonna bring!!”

If this thought has run through your head lately then you need to read on and learn more about why you are seeing these tiny invaders and how to get them out, for good!

Ants are opportunistic creatures. They are constantly searching for their next easy opportunity for food or water. They don’t really care if that is in your home or not. They have a knack for finding the smallest of entry points and then using those points as a gate into and out of your home. To limit the amount of possible entry points here are a few things you can easily do:

  • Repair or replace damaged window and door screens.

  • Keep exterior doors closed as much as possible.

  • Replace all damaged or inadequate door sweeps.

  • Trim all hedges and trees back away from your home so that they can’t be used as a bridge to the inside.

  • Be sure all water runoff systems are running freely and properly.

  • Fill in all voids, cracks, and holes in exterior and basement walls; especially around all entrances for utility pipes and wires.

  • Pick up pet food in-between feedings.

  • Keep all trash, both inside and out, stored in a closed container. Store outdoor trash away from your home and remove trash containers from your property on a regular basis.

  • Rinse dishes immediately. Don’t leave soiled dishes on the counter.

  • Keep a neat and tidy kitchen and pantry. Crumbs and open containers are enticing for ants.

If you have done all of these tips and still seem to have an ant presence in your house, then it’s time to call in the professionals. Sure, you can try those ant baits and sprays that you can purchase to try to get rid of them. You may think that it is helping for a little while, but inevitably it won’t be long and the ants will be back with vengeance. The ants that you happen to actually see are just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. They are members of a huge ant colony that can number up to into the thousands, and if those few ants found their way into your pantry and bathroom, then the rest of the thousands will too. They could, believe it or not, be living as a colony inside the walls of your home. So that small little bait and that can of spray aren’t looking so powerful now, are they? And they certainly aren’t going to get rid of your ant problem!
