With life as busy as it is, we usually don’t take the time to stop and notice the little things in life. We often miss the first bloom of the season as well as the first buds on the trees. Most of us also miss noticing those tiny bugs that are hiding on our window sills, unless their numbers increase to a point at which they are no longer a LITTLE problem! In case you have no idea what we’re talking about here, we’ll clue you in. Clover mites! These mites are a problem for many homeowners but because of their incredibly tiny size, they tend to go unnoticed until their populations explode.

What are clover mites?

Clover mites are part of the arachnid family. These pests have 8 legs, although the front pair of legs protrudes from their head. Since clover mites are so tiny, it can be pretty hard to see exactly what they look like without the help of a magnifying glass. These arachnids are only about 1/30 of an inch long and they are reddish-brown and oval in shape. They are not known for spreading any diseases, nor do they bite but they can cause irritation in some people. Clover mites may become a problem in your home when they invade in large numbers, crawling over window sills and counters and around plants. When squished, they can sometimes leave a reddish stain.

So now I am sure you are wondering how can you get rid of them?

Well, getting rid of clover mites can be a challenge! They commonly gather around siding as well as in algae or mold covered areas, including places like: your roof, around trees, plants and even in your lawn. To avoid them, you can cut back or remove vegetation from around your home (be sure to to leave an 18 to 34 inch perimeter). You can fill this perimeter with crushed rock or gravel. You should also avoid overfeeding your lawn or creating especially moist or damp areas where clover mites will likely cluster. The best way to get rid of clover mites along with other pests is to choose annual home pest control services from trusted Franklin pest control professionals. At All-American, we offer a specialized home pest control program (the Perimeter Pest Control program!) that provides protection from 47 different pests that we commonly see in our region. This service includes thorough exterior treatments along with interior services at no additional charge.
