No one wants to find a spider in their home but it seems like it is a pretty common problem for homeowners in Middle Tennessee. House spiders are the most common of species to find lurking around the house and while they are not dangerous, they sure do cause a scare! But the good news is that there are a few ways that you can get rid of house spiders and prevent their return. Note: we are talking only about house spiders here because when it comes to the more dangerous species like the brown recluse spider, we do not recommend homeowners attempting to get rid of them.

House spiders range in size, anywhere from 3/16 to 5/16 of an inch. Not very big, but it’s ok if you scream when you see them on the ceiling or in the window, we understand. As mentioned before, common house spiders are not dangerous but they do cause undue stress and leave some pretty unsightly spider webs, which is why we recommend that you get rid of spiders quickly.

As insects find small cracks and crevices to sneak inside of our homes, spiders follow suit. You see, spiders are after prey which means that if you have critters in your home, shed, garage or basement, you are much more likely to have spiders as well. Another reason that spiders go into Tennessee homes is to simply get out of the heat.

All-American’s top spider proofing tips:

  • High humidity is ideal for spiders to catch their prey, which is why we recommend eliminating high humidity areas in the home. A de-humidifier may be necessary to help control insects and spiders in your home.

  • Trim back bushes and shrubs so they do not touch the side of the home, as this will only create a bridge for insects and spiders to crawl right inside.

  • Make sure firewood is stored up off the ground and a good distance away from the home, as spiders love to hide out in woodpiles.

  • Inspect the exterior of the home for any cracks and seal them off to keep insects and spiders outside.

  • Keep the grass trimmed short to eliminate harborages.

  • Use a broom or a vacuum to get rid of spider webs that are in your home now.

Of course, in addition to your own spider proofing tips, we also recommend homeowners in Nashville, Franklin and surrounding Middle TN sign up for the Perimeter pest control program which will control house spiders as well as 47 different pests that could be trying to get into your home.
