Asian Lady Beetles are a close cousin to the common red lady bug. Many people think that these yellow or orange spotted beetles are just another version or variation of a lady bug, or that maybe they just have somehow lost their red color and have faded to a yellow/orange. These yellowish beetles are definitely unique. They have many more spots, usually 16-18, than the more common red lady bug and they are more aggressive than their red cousin. Some people have reported being bitten by an Asian lady beetle, so handle them with care!

Asian lady beetles get inside homes in the cool fall months while trying to find a warm place to spend the winter. Like many overwintering pests, they tend to congregate on the sunny side of light colored homes. And by congregate, I mean hundreds and thousands of them on one building at a time. They surely think that there is safety in numbers. Unfortunately for us, while they are crawling around the warm siding of our homes, they all too often are fortunate enough to find a way inside.

Just think, hundreds of Asian lady beetles hidden away inside your wall cavities and heating ducts spending the winter in your house. Just the winter guests you were NOT hoping for. Sometimes the flow of heat will drive them out of their hiding spots and you discover them crawling all around your walls and ceilings and around your windows. Now what do you do? Don’t just squish them, because they can leave an oily stain on painted surfaces and fabrics, as well as, they emit an unpleasant odor upon being mushed. Vacuuming works great, as long as you don’t squish them, and you have to empty your vacuum bag after each use, because they may just crawl right back out!

As you can see, ridding yourself of these unwanted winter guests isn’t a simple or quick task. The absolute best way to avoid finding yourself with this issue, is by keeping them out in the first place. Shutting down all possible pest entrances into your house is key, as well as misting your foundation with a solution that repels them.
