Sawtooth Beetles

What are sawtooth beetles?

illustration of sawtooth beetle

Sawtooth beetles are a type of stored product pest and can be found in both homes and commercial facilities.

Adult sawtooth beetles grow to be about 1/8th of an inch in length and have a long, flattened, narrow body.

They are usually brown in color.

As their name suggests, they have rows of saw-like teeth located on the first body segment found behind their head.

The larvae of the sawtooth beetle are worm-like in appearance and are slightly smaller than the adults.

The larvae are yellowish-white in color.

Are sawtooth beetles dangerous?

Sawtooth beetles are not known to carry or transmit any dangerous diseases to people, and they do not bite or sting. These beetles are not dangerous to have inside of your home, but they are a nuisance to have because they will contaminate and damage food sources that you have stored in your home’s kitchen and pantry areas.

Why do I have a sawtooth beetle problem?

The sawtooth beetle’s flat body allows them to easily enter food packaging. Infestations usually originate at a food storage or packaging facility. Sawtooth beetles typically enter into homes in products that are purchased from stores that are already infested with larvae or adults. They can be found living in and feeding on bread, dry pasta, dry pet food, cereal, sugar, candy, tobaccos, nuts, dry fruits, pasta, and dry meats.
