Tennessee. It’s the perfect place to live! We have some of the richest soil in the country which provides us with some of the best fruits, vegetables, and flowers around. Many of us enjoy tilling, planting, and harvesting our riches. Sure, we may not run a big farm and grow produce for our livelihood, but we at least like to plant a few flowers around the yard and keep a small garden to supply fresh vegetables to our family. It’s such a rewarding experience to plant and nurture and finally harvest our ‘crops’. We spend time to ensure that we can reap from our labors in late summer and early fall. In fact, we spend countless hours weeding, watering, and talking to those seedlings with the expectation of a few juicy tomatoes and a cucumber or two. If we are really adventurous we attempt corn or potatoes or beans as well. Having a green thumb here in Tennessee ensures that we have plenty of friends when fall comes around.

That green thumb will produce enemies, too. That’s right! If you have a green thumb then one of your worst enemies will be earwigs. Really? But earwigs seem so harmless, don’t they? I mean they don’t pose any real threat, do they? They don’t bite, they don’t carry and transmit diseases, what is there to worry about?

Plenty, if you have flowers or vegetables around your yard or house plants in your living room. Earwigs do not pose a direct threat to you, but they sure can do plenty of damage to your plants – both inside and out! Earwigs will cause extensive damage to seedlings, soft fruits, and sweet corn as they feast on roots, stems, and leaves. They will even damage older plants by munching on leaves, leaving behind numerous holes and ragged edges. They will then turn and enjoy your annuals, just for desert! And when earwigs are accidentally carried into your home or find a way in under a door or through a small crack in the foundation, they can cause damage to your house plants – even to the point of killing them if they are not discovered soon enough.

No pest is a good pest to allow to live in your home, and if you love to garden then earwigs are not a good pest to have there either. If you live in our Tennessee service area, then you have nothing to worry about.
