Well, one would certainly hope that an insect whose name is 'springtail' could jump. But did you know that they can jump up to 20 times further than their body size? They are 5-6mm in size and can jump from 75-100mm. That's like a 5' man jumping 75' to 100'! Considering the world's furthest long jump on record is 29' 4-3/8", a 75' to 100' jump seems nearly impossible. For us mere humans it surely is, but not for a springtail. These insects were made specifically to jump, and they do it well. They have a unique body part on their rear end. It is a little spring like appendage called a furcula that is folded forward under their abdomen when they are at rest, and when they release it, it pushes down and back against whatever the springtail is resting on and propels them into their signature long jump.

Springtails are not a threat or danger to us or plants. They actually can be beneficial in the right settings because they feed on decaying plant material, bacteria, and fungi. Most of the time, we don't even notice these small insects because they are in the soil of woodlands, on the surface of stagnant water, or in decaying vegetation. Greenhouse owners complain of their presence as being a nuisance if there are a large number of them around, but they aren't causing any real damage.

Inside homes, most people encounter these jumpers in their basements or other moist areas. Sometimes they are brought indoors on potted plants, and other times they just seem to find a way inside. Once inside they will congregate to moist areas. To rid yourself of these pests, it is easiest to just lessen the moisture level of the areas that they are in, and they may move on.
