My Mom! Barbara Foster

Southern Cross Travel & Tours

Have you ever dreamed of visiting the Great Barrier Reef? Ever imagined riding a camel to breakfast? Or what about hanging out with Tasmanian Devils? If you would like to create an experience of a lifetime, meet Barbara Foster, my wonderful Mom.

My mom has always taught our family that travel is important. We live in a pretty amazing world with so many places to visit and people to meet. Over 12 years ago, Barbara began helping others to plan their vacations to "remarkable destinations." Today, she specializes in the South Pacific which includes Australia, New Zealand, and Figi. She's traveled to Australia many times and has established great friendships and business relationship that help her to ensure a wonderful trip for each of her clients- this gives her clients great insight and benefits when planning their first, second or tenth trip to the down under.

Abbie Alexander

Teen African Relief Effort

Abbie Alexander is one inspiring youth! When I first met Abbie over 4 years ago... she told me that she was pretty sure that it was mathmatically possible to feed the entire world. Quite a statement for a then seventh grader.

I want to tell you about what Abbie is up to now! Abbie and her friend, Robert Curry, started The Teen African Relief Effort (TARE) at McGavock High School. Through their efforts, TARE, continues to raise awareness of critical issues in Africa and money for Nothing But Nets, Unicef, and most recently Darfur.

Sam Davidson

Cool People Care

Two years ago, Sam Davidson had a vision to tell the world that being 'cool' doesn't come by drinking the right soft drink or driving a certain kind of car, but rather by caring. To do that, he launched CoolPeopleCare.org right here in Nashville!

"To us, caring is a lifestyle, and not a one-time act," Sam says. "We think that our biggest problems will get addressed when everyone is thinking, acting, shopping, living, working and helping in a caring way." In order to make caring a bit more accessible for people, CoolPeopleCare.org offers up a new idea every single weekday on how someone can make a difference in less than five minutes. These 99-word articles, aptly titled, "5 Minutes of Caring," offer doable and practical advice for anyone who wants to make a positive impact in areas as varied as the environment, education, health care or animal rights.

In November of last year, Sam wrote his first book, "New Day Revolution: How to Save the World in 24 Hours." This book has over 100 ideas on how small steps can lead up to big change, and is available at local booksellers.

And now, Sam shares with us the five easiest ways you can save the world at home:

1. Stop phantom loading: Unplugging electronics when not in use can cut your utility bill by as much as 4%.
2. Aerate those faucets: By quickly installing aerators on bathroom and kitchen sinks, you'll see your water use reduced by 25%.
3. Be a rain collector: Setting up your own rain barrel can save you thousands of gallons of water each year.
4. Go cold turkey: Eating a meal that doesn't require heating (like a sandwich) can keep up to four pounds of coal in the ground (and money in your pocket).
5. Get mugged: Take your own mug to the coffee shop and save a tree in a year. And, many local shops will give you a discount on that java.
