Ants are one of the pests that we get the most inquiries about. People want to know why they are in their house, how they got in there, what kind of ant they have, and how to get rid of them. As we walk them through these questions we always stress the importance of year-round pest control. Year-round pest control addresses a lot of the issues that allow ants to come into your home.

Why are ants in my house?

That’s probably the easiest question to answer. Ants are in your home because they are looking for food and water; and if they find a suitable food and water source, they may just move in and make it their home.

How did they get in my home?

Quite frankly, they walked in. Ants are small creatures that are excellent climbers. Their entrance point can be as simple as a small hole in a window screen, a shrunk or torn piece of weather-stripping, or a damaged door sweep. And, just like little ducklings following the mother duck, ants follow the path of their nest mates and just keep on coming. Once one of them finds a way inside, you can rest assured that there are plenty more ants where that first one came from. This habit of ants is the reason why no matter how many you kill, they just keep coming and coming and coming! To truly eliminate them you need to close up the entrance point that they are using.

What kind of ant are they?

Here in Tennessee, we battle a few different types of ants. The most common ants are:

  • Carpenter Ants- These ants burrow into wood to create a nesting site for their huge colonies and are very destructive to wooden structures and the wooden framework.

  • Little Black Ants- Just like their name suggests, these are the small black ants that seem to be everywhere. They live in huge colonies and can be an absolute menace when they get indoors.

  • Odorous House Ants- Their name says it all. These small black ants are the culprits that are usually in houses. If you crush them, they give off a foul ‘rotten-coconut’ smell. Once inside, they quickly become a huge nuisance.

None of these ants is a house guest that you should welcome. Keeping ants out of your home is the most critical step to having an ant-free home.
