What exactly are those teeny bug-like things that are running around your window sill? They are so small they almost look like moving pieces of punctuation. What color are they anyway? They kinda look blackish? Wait, get your magnifying glass and take a look and you will find that they are actually red, and are most assuredly a bug and not periods come to life! They are called clover mites and are members of the arachnid family. And no matter which way you slice it an arachnid is a spider and you do NOT want hundreds of them freely roaming around in your house!

These teenie creepy crawlies prefer to be outside feeding off vegetation. They enjoy such delicacies as luscious green lawn grass, clover, various trees, and ornamental shrubs and plants. They don't usually cause much damage; however, they can give you wonderful yellow spots of damaged and dead lawn or leaves if you happen to have large numbers of them roaming about.

It is actually more of a wrong turn at Albuquerque type of situation for them when they enter your home. They were probably crawling around on those groomed shrubs that are just outside your home when their wanderings brought them onto the warm siding of your house. While enjoying the warmth of the siding, they stumbled across a crack or crevice in it, or some window trim, or maybe it was that window that the kids left open. These creatures are so small that most insect screening is not an issue for them. Either way, they have found their way inside your home.

Once inside they often congregate on warm windowsills and around all those beautiful house plants that you nurture and nurse throughout the year. Your first instinct is to just squish them, but be careful; these guys tend to leave a greasy red stain where they have met their demise. Vacuuming them works well, but it doesn't get to the root of the problem, which is fixing the point of entry that they are using and controlling their numbers outdoors.
